There are several factors at play in weight gain and loss, such as genetics, metabolism, hormones (affected by age, stress/mental health, sleep, and genetic makeup), hunger and fullness (satiety) signals, gut microbiome, physical activity, and of course food consumption. Unfortunately sometimes eating right and exercise is just not enough. If diet and exercise were enough, then why are there so many rich and famous people, who have unlimited access to personal chefs and personal trainers still needing help in the battle of the bulge. This is why weight loss needs a combination approach. Factors like genetics and metabolism can go against some of us. Add to that the fact that we live busy lives and have such easy access to unhealthy and processed foods, it seems many of us are fighting an uphill battle.
The introduction of medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide is an additional aid in this battle to stay healthy. The stigma of medication being a crutch is finally starting to go away.
Medications
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist and therefore acts to suppress hunger in the brain and also slow down your stomach’s emptying time keeping you feeling full for a longer time.
Tirzepatide is a GLP-1 agonist like Semaglutide but it also acts as a GIP agonist and has the added effect of decreasing food consumption and helps to prevent your metabolism from slowing down. In studies it is more effective than semaglutide but is more costly. At Haven we typically use this medication if a patient does not requests it or does not respond to semaglutide.
Perks of joining Haven’s weight loss journey
Both medications mimic natural hormones (GLP-1 and GIP for Tirzepatide) to regulate blood sugar, slow digestion, and reduce hunger, helping with portion control and long-term weight management.
They are ideal for adults with a BMI of 27+ (with weight-related conditions) or a BMI of 30+ who are looking for a medically guided weight loss solution. A consultation with Dr. Otero will determine if it’s right for you. If you are only looking to lose 5-10 pounds then our natural weight loss program would be a better fit.
Weight loss varies by individual, but many patients see noticeable changes within the first 4-8 weeks. Sustainable weight loss happens gradually, typically 1-2 pounds per week.
While there’s no strict diet, a balanced, protein-rich diet with portion control enhances results. Hydration and mindful eating are also key to maximizing success. This is why at Haven we offer weekly visits at your discretion to discuss which nutrition plan works best for you.
Common side effects include mild nausea, bloating, or digestive discomfort, which typically improve over time. Dr. Otero will provide guidance on managing any symptoms.
Both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are administered once-weekly by subcutaneous injection. Our team will teach you how to do this safely and effectively but if you are not comfortable self injecting we are happy to see you every week and provide this service.
Like any weight loss program, long-term lifestyle habits matter. Some weight regain can occur if healthy habits aren’t maintained. Our team supports you in making lasting changes.
Coverage varies based on your insurance plan and medical history this would be best addressed by your PCP as Haven does not contract with insurance companies. Haven Aesthetics offers affordable self-pay options to make treatment accessible. Also we can provide you with documents to obtain approval for HSA coverage.
Duration depends on your weight loss goals and progress. Some patients use it short-term, while others benefit from longer use under medical supervision.
Our program is medically guided by Dr. Otero, ensuring personalized dosing, ongoing support, and a focus on sustainable, healthy weight loss.
